ABOUT THE MANOR
Historic Locust Hill Manor offers a rich experience full of history and living accomodations. Built in 1850 by Civil War Brigidier General Alfred Cleon Moore, Historic Locust Hill Manor is a testament to antebellum culture in Southwest Virginia. The manor is a vernacular example of Greek Revival architecture, popular during antebellum years. The most telling example is the pedimented portico with ascending steps, which greets guests entering the front door. Inside the manor, a wooden staircase climbs between four floors, carrying guests from the downstairs kitchen to the attic.
All of the originial materials for the house were locally sourced, and the current owner works diligently to maintain the authenticity of Locust Hill Manor. The originial brickwork, still intact today, was sourced from red clay found near the property, and the lumber was grown in the surrounding forests. During the most recent renovation phase, the owner has gone to great lengths to find someone to re-create the original brickwork from the local red clay, still present in the area. The house boasts original woodwork all throughout including oak flooring, and yellow locust door frames, window frames, and shouldered lintels.
All in all Locust Hill Manor provides six large rooms with high windows, as well as a kitchen, dining room, and two full bathrooms. The ground floor opens into the kitchen from a back door and leads into the cozy dining room. In the hallway you’ll find the first of the two full bathrooms and the staircase.
On the first level when entering the main entrance there are three main rooms: The Bridal Suite, consisting of a spacious lounge and a dressing room with an ensuite bathroom, and the Gentlemens’ Parlor, another large sitting room. Though these rooms have been aptly named for wedding parties and events, they can serve many different purposes including recreation, bar, lounge, dining, convertible bedrooms for extra guests, etc. There are two doorways to the back deck on this floor: one from the dressing room and one from the main hallway.
The next floor up brings us to the primary bedrooms. Locust Hill Manor has three main bedrooms: The Master Bedroom, and two semi-adjoining bedrooms which share a separate staircase back down to the dressing room. These rooms have built in shelving and closet space, and are extraordinarily well lit. The front door on this floor leads to the balcony which sits right above the front porch. Directly up the stairs is the fourth floor, which provides a storage space for any items you may need to stow away during your stay.
